Job Description

$7,500 HIRING INCENTIVE

PAYMENT SCHEDULE

$3,000 paid at the time of hire

$3,000 at successful completion of probation

$1,500 at end of two years of employment

To be considered as a Police Dispatcher Lateral, applicants must be actively employed by another POST-certified agency.

Under supervision, performs a variety of duties involved in the operation of the emergency services systems and various communication devices to receive, route, relay, and dispatch calls for emergency and non-emergency law enforcement, ambulance, fire, and other services.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Dispatcher II --Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the I level, but are expected to function at a higher skill level and exercise independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained as they arise. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the I level requiring one year of experience at the I level, successful performance, budget availability and management recommendation. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the II level.

Dispatcher III --Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the I and II level, but are expected to function at a higher skill level and exercise independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained as they arise. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the III level are normally filled by advancement from the II level requiring six years of experience at the I and II level, successful performance, budget availability and management recommendation. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the III level.

Examples of duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Receives requests for police, fire, or other emergency services over the phone;
  • Answer 911, alternate emergency, and business calls;
  • Screens incoming calls to determine necessity, priority, and type of response required;
  • Monitors other agency radio frequencies to be aware of incidents elsewhere that may affect operations;
  • Dispatches units in response to calls for service;
  • Monitors all activities on the radio keeping constant communications with personnel in the field;
  • Relays information and instructions to field personnel;
  • Enters, updates, and retrieves information from the computer and teletype networks;
  • Provides general information to the public;
  • Refers calls to appropriate agencies;
  • Calms angered, distraught, or frightened callers;
  • Maintains calm in radio transmissions during hectic, tense, and dangerous situations;
  • Calls public and private agencies including allied law enforcement, hospitals, tow companies, utilities, and City stand-by personnel;
  • Operates the CLETS (California Law Enforcement Telecommunication System) to run registration checks on vehicles, property, wanted information, and driver's license status;
  • Contacts other agencies and check for warrants on subjects;
  • Operates a variety of public safety telecommunications equipment, computer aided dispatch system, and records management system;
  • Monitors, surveillance cameras, and other miscellaneous equipment;
  • Calls emergency service personnel;
  • Occasionally dispatches for Animal Control;
  • Makes recordings of telephone calls and radio transmissions when ordered;
  • Acts as matron as necessary; and
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

DISPATCHER II

Experience

  • One year of experience in emergency services dispatching.

Education

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma
  • Specialized training in emergency management and telecommunications operations.

Licenses And Certificates

  • Possession of appropriate P.O.S.T. Dispatcher/Telecommunications certifica­tion.
  • Possession and maintenance of an appropriate, valid driver's license.

DISPATCHER III

Experience

  • Six years of experience in emergency services dispatching.

Licenses And Certificates

  • Possession of appropriate P.O.S.T. Dispatcher/Telecommunications certifica­tion.
  • Possess and maintain of an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Special Requirements

Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

  • Ability to work in a standard office environment; ability to travel to different sites and locations;
  • Regularly required to talk or hear. Required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds;
  • Availability for shift work.
