Job Summary

Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) seeks a motivated and innovative Flow Cytometry Analyst. In this position, you will be responsible for managing the IUB Flow Cytometry Core Facility (FCCF), which supports life science research on the entire IUB campus and beyond. Key instruments include the Cytek Aurora Spectral Cell Sorter, Sony SH800 Cell Sorter, CytoFLEX LX Cell Analyzer, MACSQuant VYB Cell Analyzer, and COPAS Select large particle sorter. This role is essential to researchers across several departments at IUB, including Medical Sciences, Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, and Chemistry.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Responsible for oversight and maintenance of flow cytometry instrumentation, assay development, training, and facility operations.
  • Establishes, modify, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for routine maintenance and performance evaluation of flow cytometers and associated instrumentation.
  • Independently performs instrument setup, sample acquisition, calibration, alignment, and troubleshooting.
  • Oversees instrument repair and service coordination.
  • Maintains detailed documentation of instrument performance, service logs, and corrective actions to ensure optimal operation and data reliability.
  • Trains students and investigators on cytometry concepts, including instrument startup/shutdown, routine maintenance, sample acquisition, and basic data analysis
  • Educates users on sample preparation requirements tailored to their specific research goals and experimental designs.
  • Supports users in developing technically sound and biologically relevant cytometry-based approaches.
  • Collaborates with the Director and investigators to develop, evaluate, and optimize multicolor flow cytometry assays, including high-parameter panels.
  • Works independently or collaboratively to design and validate novel analytical methods with attention to accuracy, reproducibility, and biological relevance.
  • Manages laboratory resources, including supply ordering and inventory control.
  • Oversees compliance with institutional safety policies related to chemical, biological, and instrument operations.
  • Supports budgeting, cost-recovery tracking, fee development, and reporting metrics.
  • Stays abreast of emerging cytometry platforms, analytical software, reagents, and immunological techniques.
  • Evaluates and implements new tools for flow data analysis and reduction; train users on software solutions as needed.
  • Engages in continuing education and present innovative methodologies to enhance the FCCF's impact on cutting-edge research.

General Responsibilities

  • Analyzes flow cytometry data and/or sorts cells using specified Flow Cytometry Core Facility (FCCF) technology.
  • Mentors new users on the use of FCCF instruments.
  • Advises on experimental designs and project troubleshooting.
  • Performs and interprets quality control procedures, instrument function checks, and completes maintenance records.
  • Performs housekeeping, materials stocking, and disposal of liquid and solid waste and prepares reagents for the operation of the cell sorters.
  • Processes and determines acceptability of specimens for testing.
  • Performs instrument troubleshooting.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in biological sciences, chemistry, or comparable field)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 3 years Flow cytometry analysis or cellular research history.

  • Training in bacteriological, viral, chemical, and physical safety
  • Ability to work safely in a BSL2 environment
  • Demonstrates success in training others desired

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts.
